There are actions which come out unconsciously such as sneeze, hiccups or convulsion. These actions are not connected to own motivation but it influenced from outside of body. They come out suddenly and fade away silently.
People made avoiding legends for these disease. For example of hiccup, one said to "surprise him", another one said "drink a water from the other side of glass" or "stop breathing for 1 minute".
Who knows where these rumours came from, but it pulls a line to a legend. Rumour can be a lie, but spread this rumour obtain a truth inside.
